What drives the price
1. The board system
This surprises most buyers: on a full-size rink, the dasher board system can approach the cost of the ice surface itself. A basic containment board and a competition-grade dasher system with service doors, kickplates and glass are different products at different prices.
If your budget is tight, this is the first place to look — not the panels. Downgrading the surface to save money is a false economy that shows up in year four. Downgrading the boards is a legitimate choice you can reverse later.
2. What's under the rink right now
Synthetic panels need a flat, stable, well-drained base. If you already have one — a disused tennis court, a concrete slab, a paved lot — you’re at the bottom of the range. Starting from grass or broken asphalt adds a grading, base-preparation and drainage line to the budget.
Flatness tolerance matters more than people expect. An out-of-level base produces panel gaps, and panel gaps are what make a synthetic rink feel like plastic instead of ice.
3. Panel thickness and grade
Thicker panels cost more, last longer and flex less underfoot. Thin panels flex, which increases skating resistance and stresses the connections.
Worth checking early: municipal tenders frequently specify a minimum panel thickness — 20 mm is common. If you’re going through a procurement process, confirm the spec before you shortlist anyone. More on panel types and specifications →

If you’re comparing quotes, compare scope before you compare totals. A low panel price that leaves you sourcing boards, a contractor and a permit separately is not the cheaper option.

Lifespan: the number that changes the maths
Our panels are dual-sided, rated 10–15 years per face. When the first face wears, you flip the panels rather than replace the rink. That’s a 20–30 year effective service life from a single purchase.
This matters more than the sticker price. A single-sided panel — which includes most of the cheaper tile products — gives you one lifespan. Two faces at 10–15 years each means your cost per year of service is less than half that of a comparable single-sided surface, before you compare purchase prices at all.
If you’re building a business case for a council or a school board, cost per year of service is the number to lead with. They budget on lifecycle, not on purchase price.
Panels are also individually replaceable, so high-traffic zones — goal creases, face-off dots — can be swapped without touching the rest of the surface.

What about the skating experience?
This is the real question underneath the budget question, and it deserves a straight answer. Most synthetic ice does not feel like real ice. There’s noticeably more drag, and anyone telling you their panels are indistinguishable from a freshly resurfaced sheet is selling you something. But it’s worth understanding why, because the reason points at the solution.
A steel blade glides on real ice because pressure and friction melt a microscopic film of water underneath it. On a polymer surface that film doesn’t exist. A steel blade ploughs rather than glides, and the surface grinds down the edge. That’s a blade problem, not a panel problem. For thirty years this industry has attacked it from the surface side — denser polymers, better glide agents, tighter seams — and then plateaued, because no panel can make a steel blade behave the way it does on water.
